Sound Asylum: Tamara
in collaboration with Floating Tower

Sound Asylum is an ongoing collaboration between FreshGrass Institute and Floating Tower, highlighting refugee and immigrant artists whose work expands the language of contemporary music.
Tamara Jokić is a Serbian-born world music singer, songwriter, and composer whose artistry blends Balkan, Mediterranean, Iberian, and global influences into a distinctive and expressive sound. She began performing at a young age, developing a passion for traditional music styles including fado and Spanish folk alongside the rich musical heritage of the Balkans.
She studied Spanish and Portuguese language and literature at the University of Belgrade before earning a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she refined her craft as a vocalist and composer and later joined the faculty as a professor. Singing in more than ten languages, Tamara is known for her commitment to cultural storytelling and musical dialogue across cultures.
In 2022, she released her debut album, Transibérica, with Sony Music Entertainment Portugal, exploring Iberian and Mediterranean traditions through a contemporary lens. Her 2025 album, Kuća, turns toward Balkan roots and was recorded with an international ensemble of musicians.
Tamara has performed internationally at renowned venues including Carnegie Hall in New York, National Theater of Slovenia and Teatro Zarzuela in Madrid, among many others. Through her work, she seeks to bridge tradition and modern expression, creating emotionally resonant music grounded in global heritage.
