Studio 9 Presents: Bow Thayer

Bow Thayer presents Trio of Aether: TOA was born as a project that interpreted the sounds of Sun Ra and his Arkestra and then morphed into its own thing that is still evolving. The current and core lineup is composed of Bow Thayer (songwriter, multi-instrumentalist), Krishna Guthrie (multi-instrumentalist, great-grandson of Woody, grandson of Arlo) and Steve Ferraris (percussionist for Sun Ra, Mike Gordon, and many others). In the past, TOA’s lineup has incorporated many other musicians with a strong emphasis on improvisation and genre-bending arrangements. This lineup is no different in that respect. Using Thayer’s songs as a springboard for sonic exploration, TOA is tuned into playing whatever the situation may call for. Interaction with anyone present tends to dictate this. If there is dancing, the music generally follows that lead. If there is a situation that calls for ambience, then that direction may be employed. Sometimes it is just the songs that are delivered. Whatever the vibe, the band shares duties in playing rhythm as well as taking responsibility for low-end and vocals. Different instruments played by different members at different times in a sort of sound-swap gives the music a coherence that feels more like one big instrument at times. At any moment, it is important to note the immersive and interactive intentions of the band towards the audience. A song could easily start out as a folk or old time format and end up somewhere …. well, in the Aether, if the situation allows. Sit-ins and guest performers of any kind are invited. Nothing is expected but everything is celebrated.

Fresh off an adventurous tour of Alaska the band is embarking on brand new material for an upcoming album called Nineveh . Please come and help bear witness to the early stages of this project.”
